Trails of Devotion: Aadi Himani Chamunda Devi
Introduction: A Family Summer to Remember
This summer, I travelled along with my mom & sister to Himachal Pradesh to visit my grandmother (Nani) house. What began as a peaceful vacation turned into one of the most unforgettable adventures of our lives. We a family of explorers set out on a journey not just across landscapes, but through memories we’ll cherish forever. Little did we know that a casual family visit would soon turn into a thrilling trek to the sacred Aadi Himani Chamunda Devi Temple, a spiritual retreat nestled 14 kilometers above sea level, surrounded by the serenity of the Himalayan mountains.
The Journey Begins: Packing, Planning & Anticipation
Our adventure took shape over casual family conversations. After a few peaceful days at our Nani’s house, we decided to visit the famous hilltop temple over the weekend. On Friday, 20th June 2025, excitement filled the air as we packed jackets, food, water, medicines, and essentials for our uphill journey. Since basic necessities are hard to find at such altitudes. That night felt longer than usual the kind of night before a school trip when sleep is replaced by excitement.
Early Morning Start
We woke up at 5:00 AM, freshened up, and had a wholesome breakfast. By 6:00 AM, my uncle brought the car near the gate, and our road trip had officially begun, with music, laughter, and family vibes all the way to the base point.
The Trek: Rocks, Mud, and Mountains
Upon reaching the foothills, we began our climb rough terrain made of stones and mud tested our energy. The narrow paths winding around the hills. Our group began the uphill trek together, and within the first couple of hours, we already felt the strain. But the beauty around us was a welcome distraction tall green mountain stared back, and the morning sun painted everything golden.
We paused midway to catch our breath, sip water, and share snacks. Of course, we couldn’t resist clicking selfies, cools pics and videos. Now, with sticks in hand for support, we resumed our climb, passing through patches of jungle, chatting, laughing, and admiring the landscape. Everything felt new the wildflowers, the cool mountain breeze, the distant chants of other pilgrims.
We saw other trekkers, some carrying backpacks full of cooking items, groceries, and even utensils. They were having horses for carrying their belongings however they were merchants who have stalls selling tea, snacks, Maggie etc. though prices were high understandably so, given the challenge of carrying goods up that height.
Rest In Tapris
By late afternoon, fatigue hit us. The sun began to set, and the breeze turned cool. We rested at a Tapri a small hut for trekkers. We had lunch with chole, dal-rice, and ended with the classic hill station Maggi, warm and comforting. After a short nap and a cup of tea, our energy returned.
Now rejuvenated, we resumed the trek. Every “Jai Mata Di” chant from us & fellow climbers fueled our spirits. At one point, we even helped some exhausted strangers with glucose water and snacks. This small act of kindness made us feel connected with our faith, family values, act of kindness and devotion.
Above the Clouds
After several more hours of trekking, we finally reached our destination. What a sight! Looking down, the roads appeared like toy tracks, and people seemed like ants crawling below. We were literally above the clouds, surrounded by mist, with the mountains as our only companions. The air was cool; the silence was divine.
My uncle arranged accommodation through temple committee members, and we were lucky to get a place to sleep. The Bandara (community meal) served delicious food, and exhaustion quickly gave way to sleep as we laid down in a large hall with other pilgrims.
A Spiritual Morning
The next day began early. At 6:00 AM, my mom prepared halwa for prasad. We visited the ancient Aadi Himani Chamunda Devi temple a spiritual space where Bhajans and hawans added to the spiritual ambiance, wrapping us in peace. The prayers echoed and rituals filled the air with spirituality. My mom received a set of bangles from the temple priest, a traditional token of blessings. The peaceful energy left us in surprise. After darshan and some quiet time, we checked our belongings and prepared for the descent.
Downhill in the Rain
As we began our journey down, the weather turned cloudy, then rainy. The trek became slippery, and we had to be extra cautious. Hailstorm followed soon, but we managed pulling our hoods tight, supporting each other, and taking careful steps.
Eventually, we reached the base safely. A warm meal at a roadside restaurant brought comfort to our tired bodies. Then we drove back to Nani’s house, where we distributed prasad, laughed at our shared mishaps, and relived every funny, tiring, and touching moment from the trip.
